Accidental Grenade Blast at Line of Control Leaves Two Indian Army Personnel Seriously Injured in Poonch
An accidental grenade explosion during a training exercise near the Line of Control in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir left two Indian Army personnel seriously injured. Both soldiers were airlifted to Northern Command Hospital in Udhampur, and a Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident.
The incident occurred around 12:30 pm near an Army forward post in the Malti sector, close to the Line of Control, while personnel were engaged in standard training and weapon handling drills. During the exercise, a grenade accidentally detonated, causing severe injuries to two soldiers present at the site.
Following the explosion, both injured personnel were immediately evacuated to the 425 Field Hospital in Poonch, where they received urgent medical attention. Medical officials later confirmed that their condition remained serious after initial treatment.
Given the gravity of their injuries, the Army arranged an air evacuation later in the evening, shifting both soldiers to the Northern Command Hospital in Udhampur for specialised medical care.
The injured personnel have been identified as Lance Naik Ravinder Bhera of the Bihar Battalion and Agniveer Shakti Prasad.
In response to the incident, the Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accidental detonation during the training exercise.
The incident underscores the inherent risks associated with live weapon handling during military training operations in high-security forward areas along the Line of Control.
